The National Blood Transfusion Centre (NBTC) in Sana’a may be forced to close due to a lack of funding after Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) decided to end two years of funding to the center, as described by NBTC director, Dr. Adana al-Hakimi.

“The center suffers from a complete shortage of supplies, including medical solutions, blood bags and medical needs,” added by the director of the NBTC.

“If the center stops, a catastrophe will hit the whole country. Patients suffering diseases including Thalassaemia, cancer and kidney failures, etc. would be accordingly affected,” said Mr. Munir al-Zubaidi, NBTC spokesman.

WHO has been in contact with the World Health Organization to look into ways to support the NBTC but has not yet reached a conclusion whether NBTC will have urgent alternatives of support to prevent the disaster.
